Artist Statement
My work often incorporates or explores moments of transition, rites of passage, characters growing into new versions of themselves, and storytelling or performance as a tactic to hide or reveal elements of themselves.
I like to write comedy, or comedic drama, often with roots in history or heritage.
I’m drawn to characters who are artists, aspiring artists, or creatives in one way or another. My characters are often generous and kind, sometimes to a fault.
I like to find conflict that comes from people trying their best to take care of each other. I like to find the inevitable moments of failure in that.
I like a little bit of magic.
My work sometimes explores identity and heritage — especially in characters of Middle Eastern descent. As an artist originally from the Rust Belt with Lebanese heritage, my work occasionally deals with learning how to express the experience of connecting with the Lebanese culture.
I’d describe my aesthetic as playful, earnest lo-fi. I like imperfections, I like clumsy characters with good intentions, I like quiet humor.
I usually like one big moment of theatricality.
I think theatre can be challenging, eye-opening, and healing. I think it can cause us to look at the world through whole new eyes — and the best theatre can make us see the world through eyes that aren’t our own. As such, I’m very interested in community-building through theatre. In my work, I want to share stories of specific human experiences that can bring an audience together in a shared experience. I want my plays to open people up to laugh, then leave them open to feel something deeper.
I want to make theatre that challenges people to be generous to each other.
